Although the holiday season typically conjures thoughts of snow-covered streets, frosty windows and crackling fireplaces, the weather recently has been borderline tropical in comparison. As we attempt to grapple with terrifying thoughts about the reality of global warming, we’re also faced with some hefty sartorial challenges. Let’s be real: It’s legitimately painful to watch people bust out their summer whites in the middle of December, no matter how high the temperature climbs. And while we have faith that our readers would never dare tread in that dangerous territory without gutsy Man-Repeller-esque intention, we were feeling more than a little baffled by what to do about this strange weather situation. So we came up with some provisional rules to guide ourselves (and the rest of the population) until more seasonal conditions resume.
1. Layers are key. Not everything on your body has to be flannel and/or buttoned up to the neck – those short sleeve shirts and tanks from the summer are quite handy right now under a sweater.
2. Go for dark colors. Even if you’re wearing a t-shirt, it will look seasonal in deep winter tones.
3. Wear rich textures. Linens and other gauzy materials are a total no-go right now, no matter how hot it gets.
4. Mix your spring/summer wardrobe with your fall/winter wardrobe. As long as you choose pieces that are not highly polarized toward either season and strike a balance, you can’t go wrong.
5. Keep your summer footwear in your closet. You can’t bust out your sandals. You really can’t bust out your espadrilles. And you most definitely cannot bust out anything summer white.

Hunter’s inspiration for the Spring 2012 collection came from the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs. A little bit vintage, a little bit edgy and very California cool, our favorite looks have pops of color and fun textures like rope, pleats and silk. Here’s a peek at what went into the design process:

With some help from an incredible team including director Shoji Van Kuzumi, stylist Kathryn Typaldos and hair and make-up artist Sokphalla Ban, Jen and Hunter took their newest designs to the street to create this awesome Spring 2012 Preview video – enjoy!
